So your in the middle of a game of Call of Duty 5, Halo3 or Left for dead, and all of the sudden your Xbox360 starts flashing the red (3) ring of death. This is when three red lights begin to flash on the front of your system. When you see these three rings, there is immediate panic. Many already know that this means there is a severe problem with their system. The four ring flash requires cooling time, but the three ring flash, also known as the red (3) ring of death is another matter altogether. Although this indicates a serious problem, there are steps you can take to save your system.
- If your game system is flashing four rings, it just needs to cool down, so turn it off, unplug the power supply, and let it sit for a while. In addition, make sure the area in which your Xbox360 is seated is well aerated. The Xbox 360 game system, unlike the Playstation3 or Nintendo Wi, has the tendency to overheat, so it should be in a place where the air freely circulates.
Before the red ring of death occurs, your Xbox360 may already have been having problems with freezing up in the middle of gameplay. This is a sign there is a problem.
You may have already heard of so called Xbox 360 repair fixes for the red ring of death, such as the towel technique where you turn off your Xbox360 and cover it top and bottom in towels after unplugging the system. You then wait 15 minutes. This is basically a cooling technique. If this works, it is only temporary.
Hopefully you registered your Xbox360 when it was purchased. If not, do not worry. When and if you talk to support, they will ask for the serial number, which is on the back of the game system, and is twelve numbers.
The three rings of death basically mean there is a hardware problem with your Xbox360, and you will probably need to send it in for repairs. There are a couple of things you can try before you do this.
First, look at the lights on your power supply. If the light is green, you have a hardware problem. If the light is orange or red, unplug the power supply from your outlet, and then plug it back in.
If the light changes to green, and your Xbox 360 is still flashing the red (3) ring of death, you will need to send in your system for repair.
Xbox support will send a mailing label priority mail or a box (which takes 5-7 days) but is completely ready for you to send the game system. Your system will probably be gone about 4 weeks.
Xbox will fix the system for free if it suffers the red (3) ring of death, even if it is no longer under warranty.
